Manipur governor highlights tourism potential, cultural strength at Sangai Festival closing ceremony

The 12th edition of the Manipur Sangai Festival came to a close on Sunday, with governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla expressing gratitude to everyone who contributed to its success this year. Addressing the closing ceremony, he acknowledged that the event unfolded “amidst certain challenges,” yet the spirit of unity, resilience, and cultural pride remained unwavering throughout the 10-day festival.He commended the state government’s proactive steps to promote tourism nationally and internationally, citing major infrastructure initiatives such as the upcoming ropeway project.

Sangai Festival 2025 Opening Ceremony

This year’s Sangai Festival, a flagship event, saw strong participation from tourism stakeholders across India. The governor thanked associations including the Indian Association of Tour Operators, North East India Tourism Confederation, and Adventure Tour Operators Association of India for making the 3rd Manipur Tourism Congress a success.Reflecting on cultural performances, the governor praised the opening-day presentation by students of the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, calling their devotion to Manipuri dance “truly inspiring.” He also appreciated the Government Dance College students, whose closing-day performance “added depth and elegance” to the ceremony.Bhalla recognised the creativity displayed by the numerous artistes who performed across the festival. He highlighted the Sangai Film Festival 2025, which screened 28 films across four curated categories, in line with MSF DSS’s mission to nurture cinema and inspire emerging filmmakers.Sports remained a major component of this year’s festivities. In sports, five teams – USA, Colombia, Indian Polo Association, India B (Manipur), and Chhattisgarh – competed in the Manipur Polo International Tournament, where India B (Manipur) defeated Colombia 8–5 in the final at Mapal Kangjeibung. The Sagol Kangjei Cup at Kangla saw participation from 21 clubs, with X Polo Club emerging champions. The Sangai Run drew 1,500 athletes, and traditional sports such as Kang, Mukna Kangjei, Mukna and Yubi Lakpi were also showcased at Khuman Lampak.The entertainment segment of the festival also drew large crowds, particularly the Rock Concert, which featured performances by both local and international bands. The governor hailed the professionalism of the Tourism Department, Manipur Police, Youth Affairs & Sports Department, and other state officials who worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth conduct of the entire festival.He extended special thanks to the Department of Art and Culture for curating diverse cultural programmes, and to the people of Manipur for their warmth, cooperation, and hospitality toward guests. Bhalla emphasised that the festival once again reaffirmed themes of unity and non-violence – values he urged citizens to uphold as Manipur moves forward.“As we close this edition, let us carry forward the message of unity, resilience, and cultural pride,” he concluded.
